Current Volunteer Opportunities
The Golden Age Village (GAV) is owned and governed by the Chinese-American Golden Age Association, a non-profit organization. It is an independent-living senior housing center, established by Dr. Frances Wu in 1979 with the goal of creating a safe and comfortable living environment for low-income seniors. The GAV is part of the HUD Section 8 Program, which is known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, providing rent assistance to residents.
The GAV has 144 units and is the home for about 150 seniors. To enhance the residents’ quality of life, management services, monthly resident meetings, monthly birthday parties, Karaoke club, dancing classes and Tai Chi classes are provided. There is also onsite entertainment, such as a gym and a multi-purpose room.
The social service program plays a critical role at the GAV. The goals of social services are to encourage residents to address their social, psychological and physical needs so that they can continue to be independent; assess and refer residents to community resources; and to assist residents to build an informal support network within the GAV. Social services also include:
- Conduct case management and home visits
- Provide assistance with problem-solving
- Assist residents to communicate with the management team
- Develop and organize group activities onsite
